Pre Prep Department

Welcome to Pre Prep

Lochinver House Pre Prep is a thriving, productive and happy environment.  During these precious and formative years we equip our boys with the skills, opportunities and motivation to succeed, both inside and outside the classroom.  Our academic curriculum aims to inform, extend and challenge our pupils, preparing them for success in an ever changing world.  As we raise their aspirations, we begin to prepare them for the wider world.  We enable our boys to be independent learners and critical and creative thinkers.  They are encouraged to ‘have a go’ and to persevere, to give their best effort and to embrace challenges.  This positive mindset is in evidence in the classroom, on the sports field, in music, drama and art lessons and in our programme of extra-curricular activities.

Throughout Pre Prep, we also provide a variety of curriculum enriching trips,  visitor workshops and after school clubs. This includes our Art club, Splodgers, French and Chess Clubs, as well as tennis and football lessons.  From Year 2, boys have the opportunity to have individual music tuition and language lessons in the Senior School.  We also have an exciting programme of outdoor learning, an Enviro Day and Gardening Club.  Boys take part in Bounce, a day devoted to the development of Growth Mindset.  Amidst all this excitement, we help our boys to achieve a balanced life which blends work and play, challenge and rest, intensity and relaxation through the principles of Mindfulness.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Academic excellence is underpinned by a strong pastoral foundation.  Boys are taught the importance of courtesy, good manners and kindness.  They are taught to value each other and themselves and to respect different faiths and cultures.  Through charitable work, they learn to become proactive citizens.  As our youngest boys grow in confidence, they develop the independence, self-expression and social skills that will provide such strong foundations for their future.

Collaboration and Confidence

We enable our pupils to recognise and explore their talents and values.  We provide opportunities for pupils to work together as a team and to support and lead.  Boys have opportunities to represent their class at the School Council, working alongside our oldest boys.  Through plays, assemblies and classroom presentations, boys develop confidence in public speaking.  We also enable our Pre Prep boys to work collaboratively with younger and older boys on different projects and activities.

Our Staff

Teachers in Pre Prep are highly skilled professionals and each class is supported by an experienced Teaching Assistant.  Class sizes are small and expectations of behaviour high.  Though most teaching is done in class, from Reception pupils are taught Computing, Music, Drama and PE by subject specialists from the Senior School.  We also have Pre Prep subject leaders for English, Maths, Science and Humanities.  Our subject leaders work closely with the Senior School Heads of Department to ensure the curriculum has breadth, depth, challenge and progression.  Each boy’s education and welfare is overseen by the Head of Pre Prep.

Monitoring Pupils’ Progress

The boys’ progress is monitored from the day they enter School.  This is to ensure we provide a curriculum that is tailored to your son’s individual requirements.   Assessment informs planning, teaching and learning.  It measures progress and success, as well as highlighting areas for development.  In Years 1 and 2, we test boys in Reading, Writing, Maths and Science each term in addition to informal teacher assessment throughout the year.

Our Relationship With You

At Lochinver House we value our close working relationship with parents and believe excellent communication is a key factor in our children’s success and happiness.  School and home work together to identify and develop potential.  We operate an ‘open door’ policy, communication is regular and each term drop-in sessions are organised for parents.  In addition, there are two consultation evenings per year and reports are sent home three times a year.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

We believe that every child is unique.  Through positive relationships and an enabling environment, we teach our children to be resilient, capable and confident individuals.  Through self-initiated play and adult- led learning, we carefully lay lasting foundations in Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Alongside formal teaching, we provide pupils with daily opportunities to explore and investigate.  We teach our pupils the value of learning, of being motivated and persevering and of actively seeking challenges. Working in partnership with parents, we nurture our pupils’ potential, enabling them to be confident, articulate and well-rounded individuals.

Assessment

In Reception the boys follow the Lochinver Reception Goals. The staff will have a meeting to explain how this works with you at the beginning of your son’s Reception year and will report on it at the end of every half term to show your son’s progress.  In addition, you will also receive a standard report at the end of every term, as well as an invitation to attend our consultation evenings.  At the end of the year, you will be invited to attend a meeting to discuss your child’s end of year report, summarising their year in Reception as they prepare to move into Year 1.
