Julian Jackson, Senior Advisor for the Charity Fight For Sight visited Lochinver on Tuesday 12th January. He was invited by two Year 8 boys, Zach and Nic who have been in regular communication with him. The charity which celebrates its 50thanniversary this year supports research to prevent eye disease and to respond effectively to its effects in order to help those who are challenged by sight loss. The Year 8 boys had presented the work of the charity to the whole school back in September and Lochinver boys had voted to raise funds for this charity and two others as part of this year’s school-wide charitable endeavour.
Mr Jackson who had been diagnosed with eye disease as a child, lost his sight entirely, 5 years ago. He spoke with huge clarity, confidence and optimism to a theatre full of Lochinver pupils, who took the opportunity to ask questions at the end. He explained that one senior lady once asked him if ‘he was really blind, since he seemed so jolly’. Certainly Mr Jackson’s presentation to the boys about his own experience and the work of this tremendous charity was a message of hope and ambition. We thank Nic and Zach for enabling this opportunity for us all and wish the boys well as they aim to raise funds in support of the important work of Fight For Sight (www.fightforsight.org.uk).
